I wasn’t aware of the phrase “emotional labor” until literally like 3 weeks ago, and I still don’t fully understand wtf people are talking about — largely for the reasons you cited.
A lot of this seems like kindness, and a lot of it — deemed “necessary” — is actually personal choice. (One example I heard was “always being the one to send his mom birthday cards, because he won’t!” and I was just kinda like “well, it’s his mom…”)
There’s just something wrong with saying it’s “generosity” or “love,” but then also getting resentful about it. Something doesn’t fit there.
