“Research suggests that children in cohabiting families are at higher risk of poor outcomes compared to children of married parents partly because cohabiting families have fewer socioeconomic resources and partly because of unstable living situations.”

Not sure if you noticed, but it actually suggests that the root cause isn’t cohabitation, but rather fewer socioeconomic resources and unstable living situations.

While it might also suggest that cohabiting parents have higher odds of splitting up, according to this and many other studies, the real underlying issue is not marital status, but rather socioeconomic resources and other unstable living conditions.

Correlation is not causation.
